The Tapajós, the largest free-flowing river in the Brazilian Amazon, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and lush rainforest landscapes. This river sustains life for around 820,000 people, including 10 Indigenous groups across 30 Indigenous territories. It is also home to extraordinary biodiversity, with 40,000 plant species, 800 species of birds, 427 mammals, and 3,000 species of fish.

For the Munduruku people, who call the Tapajós "Ocekadi" — meaning “our river, our place” — the river holds deep spiritual significance. Historically fierce warriors, the Munduruku once dominated the Tapajós Valley, a region they called Mundurukânia. Today, their lands and the river face serious threats from illegal gold mining, dam construction, and infrastructure projects that could irreversibly harm this vital ecosystem.
